Malaysia MM2H Requirements: Current Application & Eligibility Guide
Malaysia My Second Home, commonly known as MM2H, is a long-term residence programme for qualifying foreign participants who wish to establish a longer-term base in Malaysia.
The programme has changed substantially since the 2021 rules originally published on this page. Applicants should now rely on the current MOTAC and One Stop Centre MM2H framework rather than historical financial, age or stay requirements.
The 2021 MM2H Requirements on This Page Are No Longer Current
The original version of this article reflected the MM2H rules announced in 2021, including higher offshore-income, liquid-asset and fixed-deposit thresholds and the age structure introduced at that time.
Those figures should now be treated purely as historical context. The current programme is administered through MOTAC’s One Stop Centre Malaysia My Second Home and uses a newer category-based framework.
Applicants should check the current MOTAC eligibility requirements and the specific conditions applying to their intended MM2H category.
Who Manages MM2H Today?
The programme currently operates through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) and its One Stop Centre Malaysia My Second Home.
MOTAC publishes current programme information, eligibility requirements, application forms, application checklists, endorsement checklists and information about licensed MM2H operators.
What Is Malaysia My Second Home?
MM2H is a long-term stay programme for qualifying foreign participants. It should not be confused with Malaysian citizenship, permanent residence or an employment-based immigration route.
The programme is intended for eligible participants who satisfy the current category-specific financial and participation conditions.
Applicants should assess the programme based on its actual current benefits, conditions and limitations rather than treating it as a guaranteed path to citizenship or permanent residence.
MM2H Now Uses a Category-Based Framework
The current MM2H programme is structured around multiple participation categories rather than the single 2021 framework previously described on this page.
Each category can have different financial, property, age, residence and participation conditions.
Eligibility
Applicants should first identify which current MM2H category fits their circumstances.
Financial Requirements
The applicable fixed-deposit and other financial requirements depend on the selected category.
Property Conditions
Some categories can include property-related participation requirements.
Do Not Use One Generic MM2H Requirement List
The correct requirements depend on the specific MM2H category and any special-zone conditions that apply.
- Applicant age
- Financial capability
- Fixed-deposit requirements
- Property-related conditions
- Minimum stay conditions
- Eligible dependants
- Medical requirements
- Insurance requirements
- Application documents
- Endorsement requirements
Programme rules can be updated. Applicants should use the latest official MOTAC requirements rather than relying on old blog articles or social media summaries.
Can Family Members Join an MM2H Application?
The current programme framework allows eligible family members to be included subject to the current dependant rules and documentation requirements.
The exact eligibility of a spouse, children, parents or other family members should be checked against the current category rules before submitting an application.
Spouse
A legally recognised spouse may be eligible subject to current programme conditions.
Children
Children may be eligible subject to current age and dependency requirements.
Parents
Eligibility for parents should be checked against the current programme category.
Other Dependants
Do not assume eligibility without checking the current MOTAC rules.
Typical MM2H Application Documentation
MOTAC currently publishes an official MM2H application checklist and application forms. Applicants should prepare documentation according to that checklist rather than the 2021 document list previously published here.
Passport Documents
Prepare current passport and personal identification documentation.
Application Forms
Complete the current official MM2H and immigration-related forms.
Good Conduct
Prepare police or good-conduct documentation where required.
Financial Evidence
Provide financial documentation required for the selected MM2H category.
Civil Documents
Prepare marriage, birth and other family documentation where applicable.
Medical Documents
Complete current medical requirements as specified by MOTAC and Immigration.
Verify the MM2H Operator Before Paying
MOTAC maintains current information and licensing materials for companies authorised to handle MM2H applications.
Applicants should verify the operator’s current licensing status rather than relying solely on advertisements, social media, overseas agents or historical claims.
- Check current MOTAC operator status
- Use written scope of work
- Understand government and professional fees separately
- Keep copies of all submitted documents
- Avoid guaranteed-approval claims
- Do not transfer funds without proper verification
Plan MM2H Funds Before Applying
The financial requirements of MM2H should be assessed as part of the applicant’s broader relocation and investment plan.
Applicants should separate programme funds from ordinary living costs, property purchases, business investment and other personal commitments.
Programme Funds
Plan the financial requirements of the selected MM2H category.
Property
Understand whether the selected category imposes property-related conditions.
Living Costs
Maintain adequate funds for housing, healthcare, education and daily expenses.
Business Investment
Keep business-capital planning separate from MM2H programme funds.
Can an MM2H Holder Open a Malaysian Bank Account?
The 2021 article incorrectly suggested that MM2H holders could not open business bank accounts because MM2H was a “tax-free programme.” That statement should not be used.
Personal and corporate banking are separate matters. Bank account approval is subject to each bank’s KYC, AML, source-of-funds and commercial requirements.
For a company bank account, the bank will assess the company, directors, shareholders, business activity, source of funds and expected transactions.
MM2H and Operating a Business Are Different Issues
A person may own shares in a Malaysian company while holding MM2H, but active employment or day-to-day management should be assessed against the applicable immigration and business rules.
A foreign entrepreneur who intends to actively operate a Malaysian business should compare MM2H with the appropriate business or employment immigration pathway.
Choose the Immigration Route Around the Real Objective
MM2H
Primarily designed around long-term residence under the MM2H programme framework.
Employment / Business Route
May be more appropriate where the individual intends to actively work in and manage a Malaysian company.

MM2H Mistakes to Avoid
Using 2021 Requirements
The old financial and age criteria on this page are no longer current.
Using Unlicensed Agents
Check the current MOTAC operator framework before engaging anyone.
Assuming MM2H Is PR
MM2H is a long-term stay programme, not Malaysian permanent residence.
Mixing Business and Residence
Company ownership, employment and residence require separate assessment.
Making Property Commitments Too Early
Confirm the selected programme category and conditions first.
Relying on Social Media
Use current official MOTAC information for material programme requirements.
